AWAM proudly presents our latest workshop for young Malaysian women between the ages of 18-25.

As a country blessed with a rich diversity of peoples, Malaysia is multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-religious. However, today, we see the use of ethnicity and religion to justify violence, discrimination and the violation of human rights.

This has caused deep divisions and tensions in society.

Women and girls are increasingly facing pressure to behave or dress in particular ways, in the name of culture or religion. Even though these arguments, in reality, have very little to do with either culture or religion, it is difficult to challenge opinions that are declared in the name of the Divine.

What is the future we see for our nation and for women in Malaysia?

The workshop will explore the following questions:
>>> What does it mean to celebrate diversity?
>>> How does prejudice lead to discrimination?
>>> What does it mean to have power and who has this privilege?
>>> How have ethnicity and religion been politicised in Malaysia?
>>> How do all of these affect women and girls?
>>> How can we build a more just and equal Malaysia together?

The workshop uses a range of fun yet thought-provoking activities and formats. It will guide participants in examining their own perceptions and values, and to critically analyse issues on ethnicity, religion and gender in Malaysia today.

Through this workshop, we will collectively re-imagine a different kind of Malaysia. One that is based on respect, non-violence, and non-discrimination. A Malaysia which embraces diversity.
