The Writers for Women's Rights Programme

As part of AWAM's efforts to build the capacity of young Malaysian women to engage with the media, we started the Writers for Women's Rights Programme (WWRP) in 2005. This project was initially funded by the generous support of the European Union with subsequent workshops funded by individual donors.

Targeting those between the ages of 18 and 32, the WWRP offered promising young women writers a unique opportunity to develop:

  • their understanding of gender and women's issues;
  • their writing and analytical skills; and
  • their understanding of media issues and their media relations skills and abilities

All WWRP members attended a workshop where they receive training in these areas and practical training in the form of writing letters to the editor, press statements and media articles for AWAM, guided by experienced writers and trainers. Many of our participants have written letters, articles and essays for both print and online publishing.

Run entirely by volunteers, a total of approximately 100 women were trained and participated in the programme. Alumni of the programme participated in online and off-line discussions on topical issues as part of on-going efforts to broaden their understanding and sharpen critical thinking skills.

Young Women Speak Out", a compilation of WWRP writings of essays, fiction and poetry, covers issues of gender, sexuality & equality. Published in 2007, it is available in major bookstores.
