The National Media Monitoring Survey

The National Media Monitoring Survey (NMMS) was a study of the representation of women and men in the news in Malaysia. The survey aimed to give us a detailed picture of the numbers of women and men in the news on a particular day, the different ways in which they make the news, the roles they play, the messages contained and also an analysis on the quality of the news coverage. It was based on the Global Media Monitoring Project

Findings from the NMMS illustrated patterns of a persistent lack of women in national news media. The findings were used to conduct trainings with media practitioners on the promotion of gender equality in and through the media.

The findings of the survey were published in 2007, funded by the European Commission.
