Special Projects > National Media Monitoring Survey (NMMS)

What is NMMS?

The National Media Monitoring Survey (NMMS) is a study of the representation of women and men in the news in Malaysia. The survey aims to give us a detailed picture of the numbers of women and men in the news on a particular day, the different ways in which they make the news, the roles they play, the messages contained and also an analysis on the quality of the news coverage. It is based on the Global Media Monitoring Project.

Why is this important?

Findings from the NMMS can be used to illustrate patterns in news content, to highlight the persistent lack of women in national news media, to start dialogue between media advocates and media practitioners. This is a vital contribution to the empowerment of women and the promotion of gender equality in and through the media.

Who is conducting the survey and what are the aims of this survey?

The All Women's Action Society (AWAM) with the support of the European Commission is conducting this survey with the aim of enhancing women's engagement in promoting principles of gender equality, non-discrimination and democracy in the national agenda.

When and where will the survey be conducted?

The survey will be conducted on a day in July 2006 in 8 states in Malaysia; namely Kuala Lumpur/Selangor (Klang Valley), Johor, Melaka, Pahang, Penang, Perak, Sabah and Sarawak.

How will the survey be conducted?

Three main media (television, radio, newspapers) in Malaysia will be monitored by designated individuals in various states on the aforementioned date. After the necessary information is collected, the data will be collected and analysed.
