AWAM's outreach programme with the Orang Asli started in Pulau Carey (Carey Island) in 2001 following our decision to embark on a campaign to create a violence-free society. This campaign sought to empower women in different sectors of society via a three-year awareness-raising and capacity building programme to enable them to make positive changes in their lives.
The programme had three stages. First, we trained the Orang Asli women in Pulau Carey about their rights. Next, we ran gender-sensitising workshops on issues relating to violence against women for service providers to the island. After this initial groundwork was done, both groups were brought together in a dialogue to reduce the level of violence against women and ensure that gender-sensitive services were made available for women who had been violated.
In an evaluation of this project in 2004, it was encouraging to note that the community felt that on the whole they had gained a better understanding on issues related to violence against women, the laws and their legal rights, and that they now knew how and where to seek help. We also saw improved cooperation and relationships with service providers. The community will continue to work with AWAM to create further awareness and changes.
In 2005, an English language course for adults and school-going teenagers was set up under AWAM's supervision. The first phase of the programme ran from August to October, and more classes are being planned. |
