Building Greater Democratic Processes and Citizens' Participation through Advocacy, Education and Reforms and Enhancing the Monitoring of the Commitments of the Malaysian Government (2005-2007)

This is a collaborative project between AWAM, Women's Development Collective (WDC) and a Women's Centre for Change (WCC) that aims to strengthen cooperation among women's NGOs for the promotion of gender equality, non-discrimination and democracy. Towards this end, each organisation has conceptualised and is running a series of activities.

AWAM's emphasis is on capacity building of young women, through training workshops and the production of training materials (e.g. a manual and leaflets on women's rights); alliance building with groups in Pahang, Johor and Melaka; and conducting the Writers for Women's Rights Programme. WDC's activities incorporate three working modalities - analysis and debate, monitoring of elected representatives, and training workshops. As part of its programme, it has produced an Advocacy Kit titled "Forwarding Women's Rights and Democracy" and coordinated a charter called "Local Democracy and Governance for Local Authorities".

WCC is engaged in a research project to document gender insensitivity involving sexual crimes in the judicial process. This project is supported by the European Commission.
