AWAM is an active partner of legal and policy advocacy campaigns on:

  • The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)

Coordinated by the Women's Aid Organisation and the National Council of Women's Organisations, women's rights NGOs are writing a shadow report to Malaysia's country report, due for review before the CEDAW Committee in July 2006. Together with these groups, AWAM seeks for:

    • The immediate removal of all reservations made to CEDAW.
    • Mechanisms to be in place for the implementation of CEDAW and the Beijing Platform for Action.
  • Islamic Family Law

Led by Sisters in Islam, this advocacy campaign seeks a review of the Islamic Family Law for standardisation of the law at all state levels, as well as reform towards aspects of the law that currently discriminates against women.
  • Discrimination at the workplace - Beatrice Fernandez v MAS and MASEU

In 2005, the Joint Action Group against Violence against Women lent its support to female staff of Malaysian Airlines who filed a case against the company and the staff union for gender discriminatory practices. Among these were the requirement that all female flight attendants resign from their jobs when they became pregnant; the practice of limiting each female flight attendant to a maximum of two children; and forcing them to retire at 40 years of age (45 years for senior female flight attendants) while male flight attendants retire at 55 years of age.
