AWAM brings forward women's concerns to decision-makers, and lobbies and advocates for improved legislation and policies on gender-related issues, including rape, domestic violence, sexual harassment, and women and the media. We have been able to influence decision-making through our interventions in several government-led steering committees and technical working groups, such as the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development's National Steering Committee on Violence against Women, and Technical Working Group on Women and Law. When necessary, we collaborate with other women's NGOs - for example, through the Joint Action Group for Gender Equality (JAG) - to give greater impetus to our lobbying and advocacy efforts.
Public education is another area in which AWAM specialises.
Our training expertise is in the area of gender analysis, rape, sexual harassment, domestic violence, sexual harassment, women and the media, and feminist counselling. We offer customised programmes and have worked with hospitals, the police, the welfare department and other government agencies, as well as educational institutions, community groups and NGOs.
We also raise public awareness on a range of issues to change perceptions and challenge societal norms that restrict women's freedom and security. We do this by putting up exhibitions and information booths, holding talks, seminars and workshops. Through consistent engagement with the media, we are able to further publicise women's concerns. Together, these different avenues allow us to increase the level and depth of understanding on women's human rights.

Telephone and face-to-face counselling sessions are provided on a range of issues, from domestic violence, rape and sexual harassment to work or school-related problems, health, relationships and family matters. We also offer legal aid. Our services are free of charge, confidential, and we cater to all kinds of women, regardless of age, ethnicity, religion, geographical location, income, sexual preference or status. Any woman who needs assistance can either call our helpline, Telenita, or make an appointment to see one of our social workers.

From time to time, AWAM conducts special projects that works on specific issues related to women's human rights.
Currently, we are running two projects on media and communications: the first is a series of capacity building workshops called 'The Writers for Women's Rights Programme (WWRP)'; secondly, AWAM will be running the National Media Monitoring Programme starting in 2006. |
